Mehdi Rezania - Biography

Mehdi Rezania was born in Abadeh, Fars in August 1977. He began playing santur at age 13 with Bahman Nowruzi & Mohammad Rasuli (1990) inspired by the works of Master Parviz Meshkatian. After finishing the introductory level he continued his musical education by self-learning through available tapes and notations. Inspired by the innovation and creativity of Master Ardavan Kamkar he studied the advance level of santur playing under his supervision and simultaneously studied Agriculture Engineering at Tehran University.

In 1998 he migrated to Canada with his family. In 2001 he founded Simorgh Association with the goal of promoting the Persian culture and music in young generation living aboard their homeland and performed four consecutive cultural-musical events from Fall 2001 to Summer 2002. After his friendship to Toloe Roushenas -a graduate musician and pianist- who became his wife and soul mate they started to focus merely on music and together they founded Baarbad Music.

Rezania graduated from York University with bachelor of psychology (major) and music (minor). He is finishing his bachelor of music with focus on composition at the same school and has been a member of:
- Middle Eastern Ensemble under professor Bassam Shahuk
- World Music Ensemble under Matt Brubeck
- New Music Ensemble under Matt Brubeck
- Balkan Music Ensemble under professor Irin Markof

He has also taken interest in folklore music of Cuba and West Africa and has taken all the four levels of drum performance in those genres at York University.

After taking counterpoint and harmony courses by professor Arthur Levine, he started composing in polyphonic. "Meditation In Mahur" is the first of works in combining the traditional Persian Classical with Western Classical. His other polyphonic works in 2008 are: "Ashkbar" [In Tears] for santur & cello, "Neyriz" for santur & string quartet, "Khoruh" duet for 2 santurs, "Birth" for tar & string quartet which will be published and performed soon.

Beside performance Rezania has taken a great interest in the various styles of santur playing. He works on a thesis based on this subject with the emphasis on the works of Master Ardavan Kamkar.
